Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Little Women follows the lives of the four March sisters, from oldest to youngest: Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. A romance, a quest, a family drama that validates virtue over wealth. The start of the story is set at Christmastime, where Jo, the second eldest of the March sisters, grumbles that Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents. The four girls discuss the upcoming holiday and sigh as they long for pretty things that they can’t have because of money constraints

Louisa May Alcott was an American novelist. She grew up among many of the well-known intellectuals of the day such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau. Alcott’s best work includes her novel Little Women (ISBN: 9781909904422) which she wrote upon request of her publisher and its sequels Little Men (ISBN: 9781909904439) and Jo’s Boys (ISBN: 9781909904446). Alcott’s family suffered severe financial difficulties and Louisa worked to help support the family from an early age.

Mumu

An audio book adaptation of Turgenev’s story set on the outskirts of Moscow, in the house of an old widow. The story was written in 1854 by Ivan Turgenev, a great Russian novelists of the nineteenth century. Turgenev wrote Mumu with such vivid images and reflections of the state of the tsarist Russia that this piece together with his other stories was credited with having influenced public opinion in favour of the abolition of serfdom in 1861.

Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev 1818-1883, a Russian novelist, short story writer, and playwright. His short story collection entitled The Hunting Sketches, is a milestone of Russian Realism, and his novel Fathers and Sons regarded as one of the major works of 19th-century fiction. Turgenev studied literature, philosophy and philology at the Universities of Moscow, St Petersburg and Berlin and in 1879 received honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford.
